Understanding the National Debt and Budget Deficit
In which John discusses the US national debt, the federal budget deficit, plans for shrinking or eliminating the deficit, and tries to provide some context to the political rhetoric and statistics that are constantly thrown around in an election season. Along the way, I hope you'll understand why the United States' sovereign debt hasn't led us to an economic crisis, but also why budget deficits need to shrink in order to ensure that credit remains inexpensive and the US continues to enjoy the trust of the world economy. (Friendly reminder: Educational videos, by extensive precedent, are allowed to be longer than 4:00.)
Here's why I think the gold standard is a bad idea: 1. By restricting money supply to the supply of gold, you risk shrinking the money supply just because of a shock leading to a disruption in supply from mining. This creates a lot of volatility in the money supply for no reason. 2. The gold standard limits a government's ability to respond to changes in the market, which can (and has) led to unescapable deflationary spirals. 3. Far from inspiring investor confidence, its implementation would crush it:

Indexing and inflation — with Milton Friedman (1974) | ARCHIVES
1974: To combat inflation, the United States attempted to regulate wages and prices, so neither would go up dramatically. But economic controls were not successful, and may have even made inflation worse. Another strategy, called indexing, ties wages and interest payments to increases in inflation, but also presents its own set of problems.

Be good (and don't be evil): how to audit your work for fairness and inclusion - Aileen Nielsen
PyData London 2018
There is mounting evidence that the widespread deployment of machine learning and artificial intelligence in business and government is likely reproducing or even amplifying existing prejudices and inequalities. Even when an analyst wants to pursue fairness and accuracy, it is easy to unintentionally create discriminatory code. I will discuss how to be good and avoid being part of the problem.
PyData is an educational program of NumFOCUS, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in the United States. PyData provides a forum for the international community of users and developers of data analysis tools to share ideas and learn from each other. The global PyData network promotes discussion of best practices, new approaches, and emerging technologies for data management, processing, analytics, and visualization. PyData communities approach data science using many languages, including (but not limited to) Python, Julia, and R.

Med School Lingo
In this video, I go over several terms that I kept hearing in medical school. There is no order to the terms I included in the video, but they are all part of the lingo of medical school. There are literally thousands of new words that doctors learn and all play a part in almost an entirely different language from what patients understand. You'll also notice through medical school, that you'll find yourself defining words to friends, family, and patients, and so I put this video up to define words that I was myself confused by what they meant, and then also found myself explaining over and over to others. I hope you enjoy. Thanks for watching!

Farm bills, state of the media, and the NCB’s drug probe | NL Hafta Episode 295
This week on #NLHafta, the usual team of Abhinandan Sekhri, Manisha Pande, Raman Kirpal and Anand Vardhan are joined by Newslaundry’s Jayashree Arunachalam and author #ChetanBhagat.
The discussion starts off with the economic slowdown in India. The panel moves on to discussing the current state of the media in India, given the ongoing “SSR frenzy”. The Indian audience’s obsession with entertainment, even while watching the news, is what Chetan believes is driving the media to focus on sensationalism.
The conversation shifts to the #farmbills, which are a bone of contention for the governing BJP and the Opposition.
This and more, only on this week’s Hafta.

Julian Assage, the founder of Wikileaks, has remained shrouded in mystery since the launch of his site in 2006. This fascinating expose reveals the man behind the leaks.
Assange spent the majority of his youth travelling from place to place, attending 37 different schools and being charged with numerous hacking offences. While he continues to move, he does so to maintain his extensive network of Wikileaks contacts and to avoid the unwanted attention of governments. Despite frequently hitting the front pages of newspapers around the world, Assange has somehow managed to retain a low profile. This is now changing as he finally steps into the spotlight to defend Wikileaks and to address what he feels is a false perception the media is portraying of him. The true nature of this world is being revealed. It's not being interpreted for you. There it is, face to face from the inside. Now, with Wikileaks, he is finally offering it to the world.

The new EU regulation MiCA for cryptocurrencies: a major breakthrough?
About this Event
The European Union seems to have made considerable progress in developing a comprehensive regulation for the digital finance industry. A new regulatory framework aims to further promote the potential of digital finance in terms of innovation and competition while reducing risks. A quick look at The Proposal for A Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) indicates that urgently needed changes in relation to crypto assets are approaching. The draft sets out several objectives, including:
Creation of legal certainty in dealing with crypto assets
Promotion of innovation in the crypto market
Creation of adequate consumer and investor protection
Ensuring financial stability against the background of stablecoins
It can be assumed that Libra in particular has provided the impetus to accelerate and systematize regulation. And yet it is surprising that the cryptocurrency sector, which is still of little economic significance today, is subject to such comprehensive and detailed regulation.
The panel discussion will focus on the scope and consequences of the regulation from different perspectives. Therefore, we would like to address the following questions:
Will the developments in the crypto market be accelerated or slowed down by the regulatory impulse?
Will all crypto assets now be put on an equal footing with traditional assets?
What appropriate laws and safeguards must be implemented to meet the needs of an ever-changing crypto market?
What does this mean specifically for STOs and traditional financial instruments?
During the online panel you will also have the opportunity to ask direct questions to the speakers.

TotalPicture Media SME Series:College During Covid 19 with Steven Rothberg
I feel like we’re living in one very long episode of Breaking Bad. Someone on Twitter wrote, “Canada is a nice, friendly, country living on top of a meth lab.” For many groups, there’s nothing normal about this ‘new normal’ we’re living in. That’s especially true for college students. COVID 19 has completely upended college life. Hi, this is Peter Clayton with TotalPicture Media. I wanted to talk with an expert in college recruiting to get a sense of how the pandemic of 2020 is impacting students, faculty, administrators and recent grads. And I have one: Joining me today is the founder and President of College Recruiter, Steven Rothberg.
College Recruiter, launched in 1996, is the leading job search site used by students and recent graduates of all 7,400+ colleges and universities who are seeking internship, part-time jobs, seasonal work, and entry-level career opportunities. College Recruiter’s customers are primarily Fortune 1000 companies, federal government agencies, and other employers who want to hire dozens, hundreds, or thousands of students and recent graduates each year.
Steven, welcome back to TotalPicture Media. Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today.
2:38 Tell us about the journey your company, College Recruiter, has taken since February/March of this year – how has COVID changed your business?
8:22 It seems that disruptive is the adjective du jour this year for just about everything. However, it can truly be said that all aspects of college have been disrupted. Probably right up there with hospitality and travel. What are you hearing from students?
13:09 One of your comments on your recent guest appearance with our friend William Tincup on the Use Case Podcast had to do with internships, and what several companies, including PwC, are doing. Can you share that with us?
16:36. I’ve been fortunate to be involved with the College Recruiter Bootcamp for the past couple of years, producing videos at your events, thanks to the sponsorship of AllyO. So Steven, will there be a virtual Bootcamp this December?
26:14. I know you’ve been blogging about the rising cost of college tuition and the fact that many universities are charging the same for virtual as being on campus. Can you explain why?
33:50 Another blog topic on CollegeRecruiter.com – taking a gap year. That certainly has been in the news, given that a number of students have decided to take a gap year rather than pay for a year of no on-campus anything. What can you tell us about the prevalence of this – and the pros and cons?
37:26. What do college seniors need to do NOW to find a good job after they graduate in 2021??
41:08 Do you think the current reliance on WFH will have a long-term impact on staffing and employment?
48:16 Has the focus on hiring a more diverse workforce (especially at large organizations) impacted college recruiting?
54:50. Are different colleges getting targeted, such as traditional African American universities?
58:21. What would you like to share, particularly with college students that we haven’t discussed?
